Kelsall Large Timber Log Store

Description

Firewood does not dry in a pile under a tarpaulin. The Kelsall is built to season it: an open front, slatted sides and a slatted back so wind moves through the stack, a base raised 12 cm clear of the ground on timber feet so damp does not wick up, and a felted roof with a generous front overhang that keeps rain off without trapping moisture inside.

It holds roughly 1.2 cubic metres of split logs, which is about a builder’s bag and a half, or a winter of weekend fires. The frame is 45mm x 45mm pressure-treated softwood, heavy enough to carry a full stack without bowing, and the slats are 18mm pressure-treated boards. Everything is pre-cut and pre-drilled and it assembles flat against a wall in under an hour with a screwdriver.

Care

Stand the store on a firm free-draining surface with the open front away from the prevailing wet wind. Treat the timber with exterior wood stain or oil in the first year and every two to three years after that, and sweep bark and dust out of the base each time you restock so air keeps moving under the stack.
