Ashcroft 6×4 Apex Garden Shed

Description

The Ashcroft is our starter garden shed: a 6ft x 4ft apex building in pressure-treated European softwood that takes a mower, a strimmer, a set of garden tools and the bikes off the patio. The apex roof sheds British rain to both sides rather than pooling, the styrene window brings daylight to the bench end, and the black hasp and staple takes a standard padlock.

Walls are 8mm overlap boards on a planed 28mm x 28mm framework, so the panels stay square once they are bolted together. The floor is 11mm tongue-and-groove on solid timber bearers that lift the boards clear of a wet base, and the roof is 11mm boarding covered with mineral felt. Every panel is pre-cut and pre-drilled: two people put an Ashcroft up in an afternoon with a screwdriver, a hammer and a spirit level.

Care

Pressure treatment protects the timber against rot and insect attack from the day it arrives. Give the shed a coat of exterior wood stain or oil in the first year and a re-coat every two to three years to hold the colour, and keep the felt clear of fallen leaves. Freshly treated softwood mellows from honey-brown towards silver-grey outdoors; that is the surface only and does not weaken the wood.
