Description
The Winsford is the planter you use when you want a line rather than a pot: 120 cm long and raised on legs, it works as a low divider across a patio, a screen along a boundary or a run of colour under a window. At 25 cm deep it holds enough compost for lavender, rosemary and ornamental grasses to establish properly instead of drying out every second day like a shallow window box.
Boards are 20mm pressure-treated European softwood, butt-jointed into four 45mm square legs that lift the base 30 cm off the ground so paving stays dry underneath and slugs have further to climb. The base is slatted with drainage gaps rather than drilled holes, so water never sits at the bottom. It arrives flat with pre-cut parts and assembles in twenty minutes.

Care
Add a 3 cm layer of grit or broken crocks over the slatted base before filling so compost does not wash through, and use a gritty peat-free mix for lavender and grasses. Treat the timber with a plant-safe exterior wood oil in the first year and every two to three years after that. Check the legs sit level so the trough drains evenly.
