Description

The Fairhaven is a proper working vegetable bed rather than a decorative box. At 1.8 m x 0.9 m you can reach the middle from either side without standing on the soil, and at 30 cm deep there is room for carrots and parsnips to run down rather than fork. Raising the soil means it warms earlier in spring, drains after a wet week and stays out of reach of most slugs.

Boards are 32mm pressure-treated European softwood, thick enough that they do not bow outward once the bed is full and wet. They slot into routed grooves in four 70mm x 70mm corner posts, so the whole bed goes together without a single visible screw on the outside face and comes apart again if you move house. Two beds stack to make a 60 cm deep bed for potatoes or a no-dig build.

Care

Line the inside faces with permeable membrane if you want to slow surface weathering; never line the base, the bed needs to drain into the ground below. Treat the outside with a plant-safe exterior wood oil in the first year and every two to three years after. Top the soil up each spring, as a filled bed settles by a few centimetres over its first season.
